BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – The Butte County Department of Public Health announced that a person who arrived in Chico from another county has been confirmed to have Neisseria meningitis.
Neisseria meningitis is a bacteria that causes a life-threatening disease called meningococcal disease, BDPH said.
BCPH said the man went to multiple parties at a local fraternity house in April from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and then again on April 13 between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. This man attended the following fraternity houses: Lambda, Phi Tau, Theta Chi, and K-Sig in downtown Chico.
BCPH said individuals who attended this party at the same time as those who have Neisseria meningitis should contact the Student Health Center or their primary health care provider and inform them of their potential exposure.
Neisseria meningitis can spread from person to person through coughing or close contact with someone who is sick or carrying the bacteria.
